Team work can never be separated from an organization. It is crucial for companies to have fluid relationships among team members so they can operate more effectively. In doing so, team members should have an understanding about differences in communications, particularly in a team where it consists of people from different generations.

This article is a tip on how to motivate people across generations. Nevertheless, some ways proposed in the article might not suitable to be applied wholly in an Indonesian team. You should always analyze the most suitable and appropriate way in motivating people in your team.

Silent Generation (or Veterans) (~1925 to 1945)

Choose formality over informality. For example, communicate face-to-face and by live phone calls rather than voicemail, fax, or email. Explain the logic of any action. Use traditional forms of recognition — plaques, certificates, photos.

Baby Boomers (~1946-1965)

Lay out a clear series of steps toward a defined goal. State objectives and desired results in people-centered terms. Make Boomers part of a team effort. Pep talks can help. Choose forms of recognition that are widely noticed.

Generation X (~1966-1982)

Tell them what needs to get done but not how to do it. Give them multiple tasks but let them set their own priorities. Avoid platitudes and buzzwords. Provide frequent and frank feedback, and ask for their reaction and opinions. Pep talks can be a turn-off. Allow time for fun.

Generation Y (~1976-2001)

Provide opportunities for continous learning and building skills. Know their personal goals and tell them how the tasks they’ve assigned fit into them. Emphasize on the positive; look on the bright side. Be more of a coach and less of a boss.

Update: When you upgrade your Wordpress via Fantastico, it automatically deletes the modified widgets.php. You have to redo it again Sorry but this is the only way. Why not just copy the old version one? This is to ensure that your widgets.php will always follow the lastest version. If you used the older version, I’m afraid it may not work as intendend.

Anggapan bahwa orang Indonesia itu kecil-kecil kayaknya harus direvisi. NOT ALL Indonesians are kecil-kecil. Ini soalnya berakibat kepada susahnya orang-orang yang bertubuh besar untuk cari pakaian.

Banyak di toko pakaian ukuran XXL itu hanya lebih besar beberapa mili dari ukuran XL, yang notabene dibuat berdasarkan asumsi orang Indonesia itu kecil-kecil. Tapi lihat deh generasi sekarang. Anak-anak SMA paling ngga udah gede-gede banget. Berbeda dengan generasi taun 70 an atau 80 an. I think it has something to do with their foods.

Actually I think it is a good business opportunity if pedagang pakaian start focusing also on big size people. I had a friend like that, but I’m not sure if she continues selling big size t-shirts.

It would be perfect kalau misalnya ada pedagang grosiran yang menjual pakaian dengan ukuran besar-besar. Besar-besar untuk orang Indonesia yang besar-besar. Bukan ukuran besar untuk orang Indonesia yang kecil-kecil.

No offense to smaller size people.

Looking at the picture of myself at Pesta Blogger made me realized that I already have too much blubber in me (a.k.a fat). My face is blubbery round and my tummy is like … well.. I don’t know what it’s like. It’s just too … well.. too… hard too discribe… Aaaargh!

Finally Pesta Blogger 2007!

It was a busy day for everyone at Maverick who were assigned to manage this event. I was also part of the team and I experienced it first-hand how busy things can be. A day prior to the day I had to stay at the office until 9 pm. Preparing and cross checking everything so we wouldn’t miss on anything.

The next day I went to Maverick office at 7 am and left to Blitz Megaplex fifteen minutes later. The only thing that made me uncomfortable was the t-shirt. It was too tight for me and very warm to wear, but luckily it was manageable.
